Charles Bevington, Jr., 84, of Knowlton Twp, N.J., died Monday, May 16, 2005 in his home. Born July 7, 1920 in Wellsville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Charles, Sr. and Maude Fickes Bevington. A graduate of Wellsville High School, Charles attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He later served in President Franklin Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps in Utah and other western states. He was a radioman, first class, with the Navy from 1942 to 1945 and was awarded the European African and Middle Eastern Ribbon with two stars, the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Ribbons, the Good Conduct and World War Two Victory Medals. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Charles arrived in New York City and while working for Colonial Airlines met whom came to be his wife of fifty-eight years, Laura Anna Heim of Roxburg, NJ. They married April 6, 1947 and raised their four children in River Edge, New Jersey. They later retired to their current residence at Manunkachunk-on-Delaware in 1988. He was a member of the Belvidere American Legion Post 131. Charles will be remembered as a devoted husband, a great father and loving grandfather, skilled woodworker, photographer, web surfer, an ardent New York Mets fan and avid reader. With his passing goes the most extensive vocabulary ever possessed outside of the dictionary. In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by three sons, Glenn and his wife Donna of Belvidere, Charles and his wife Susan of Rocky Point, NY and William and his wife Elaine of Atlantic Highlands, NJ; a daughter Kathleen and her partner Margaret of Long Island City, NY; grandchildren Alec, Caslon, Lindsay, Leon and Amelia; a sister-in-law Henrietta; nephews Guy, Geoffrey, Douglas, Patrick, Bobby and nieces Lorraine and Dinah. Charles was predeceased by a brother, Bobby, a sister Julia Belle Pollak and a grandson Todd. A private family service will be held at a later date.
