Alice M. Cummings

Alice Mary Cummings, a longtime resident of Warren Haven Nursing Home in Mansfield Twp., formerly of Phillipsburg, died peaceably on Monday, May 15, 2007. The oldest resident of Warren Haven, and perhaps Warren County, Alice reached 109 years, 6 months and 7 days of age.

Alice was born by a midwife in the Hells Kitchen section of New York City, New York to John and Theresa Lorentz Morganweck on November 7, 1897. William McKinley was President and Thomas Edison had patented his movie camera, the Kinetograph, just one week prior to her birth.

Mrs. Cummings has been described as "hard working and stoic" by her grand-daughter, Barbara Donnelly of Oxford. She raised and supported her two daughters and herself through the Great Depression, taking jobs first as a charwoman, and then as a factory worker. Her husband, Robert, was unable to find carpentry work during this difficult time and fell victim to alcoholism. In the best sense, Mrs. Cummings was a survivor and a care-giver throughout her life.

Living simply and frugally, Alice was blessed with good health and a strong constitution. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters, and her warmth and compassion extended through her love of animals, especially horses and her pampered dogs, wild animals and birds.

Mrs. Cumming’s is survived by her daughter Alice, of Harmony; her grandson Robert Kirk of Woodstock, Ct, and his family; her grand-daughter Barbara Donnelly of Oxford, and her family. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Helen C. Wilson, who died Christmas Day, 2003.

The family extends their thanks to the staff of Warren Haven for the excellent care and many kindnesses they provided Mrs. Cummings. They would also like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice of Parsippany for their excellent care during her last months.

A private service was held at her grand-daughters the day following her death. The Noto-Wynkoop Funeral Home, 289 South Main St., Phillipsburg is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be submitted by visiting www.noto-wynkoop.com.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to make donations, in Mrs. Cummings' name to Compassionate Care Hospice, 140 Littleton Rd, Parsippany, NJ 07054, or to a hospice of your choice.
