Thur 11/18/99

As my now "historic mind" reminisced relative to the passing of "Dink" Beatty, whom I first came to know when I became a police officer in P'burg in 1956, I recalled something about the man that was his trademark... his hat.

Dink's hat, in my estimation, stood out more than his broad smile and good-natured mannerisms. As I remember that hat which most likely was perhaps only one of a few in his wardrobe, it was most often of the "Panama" style with a colorful band around it. Very seldom did anyone ever see him in public without his hat. Of course, he wore a more appropriate hat of the "Sunday-go-to-meeting" variety when the occasion called for it.

It seems odd that when a likable person of prominence with so many professional and personal qualities there are to remember him, that someone in the wings like me has to remember a hat. Historically, President F.D.R. had his cigarette holder, George Burns his cigar, Jack Benny his violin and General Eisenhower his famous grin. So, why not Dink Beatty and his hat? It's much easier to keep the memory of a friend alive by associating it with his or her "trademark".

Hat or no hat, Dink should just be remembered for being the good citizen and friend that he was in the community and beyond.

In Peace
