George R. Zammatore

George R. Zammatore, 94, of Lopatcong Township, formerly of Phillipsburg, died Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Lopatcong Center.

George owned and operated George's Hat Cleaning and Shoe-Shining Parlor on South Fourth Street, Easton for seventeen years, until 1950; a grocery store on Lehigh Street, Easton until 1954 and George's Food Market on Thomas Street in Phillipsburg for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 1980.

Born November 15, 1913 in Easton, he was the son of the late Tommaso and Rosa Palmisano Zammataro.

He graduated from Easton High School in 1932.

He was a faithful member of St. Philip and St. James Roman Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, were he was a past president of the Holy Name Society. He received a special award for revitalizing membership within the Society, increasing membership from six to one hundred members. He also participated in the Nocturnal Adoration Society and the Over-Fifties Club.

George was a leader in many community and religious organizations, including being a founding trustee of the Phillipsburg Senior Center; a R.S.V.P. volunteer; active at the Phillipsburg site of the Warren County Nutrition Program for many years; past president of the former St. Peter and St. Paul Church Holy Name Society; served as president of the Warren County Nutrition Advisory Council for eleven years; past president of the Phillipsburg Nutrition Site Council where he served for over 14 years; chairman of the Warren County Transportation Advisory Council for four years; past secretary of the former H.E.A.D. Golden Age Club of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Easton; past president of the former Young at Heart Club, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg; past vice-president of the Warren County Ostomy Association; past president of the John F. O'Donnell Social Club, Phillipsburg; life member of the Son's of Italy of America, Milo-Volta Lodge #30, Easton; member of St. Mary's Golden Age Club, Alpha, NJ, and was a former member of the MORA Club, Easton.

His wife of sixty years, the former Rose J. LaMotta, died June 17, 1998.

He is survived by a son, Thomas A. And his wife, Migdalia, of North Arlington, NJ; two daughters; Roseann Affa and her husband John, of Palmer Township and Sister Mary Martha, O.S.F., Bethlehem, Pa; four grandchildren, Christine (Affa) Mertz, Michael T. Affa, Thomas George Zammatore and Steven Angel Zammatore; six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Four sisters, Nettie Gerbino, Bessie Zammatore, Lucy Todaro and Pearl Butler, all died earlier.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, in Ss. Philip and James Roman Catholic Church, 426 South Main St., Phillipsburg; Entombment will be in the Holy Apostle Mausoleum, Greenwich Twp. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Noto-Wynkoop Funeral Home, 289 South Main Street, Phillipsburg.
