Howard S. Pyatt, known better as "Zeke", 79, of Phillipsburg, N.J., died peacefully September 4, 2020 in his home.
Born March 5, 1941 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Frederick and Cleda (Watson) Pyatt.
Zeke was a retired machinist at the former Bell and Howell in Lopatcong Township.
He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg and volunteered to deliver for the Phillipsburg Area Meals on Wheels program. Zeke was an associate member of the Marine Corps League, Easton. He also served as a football coach for PAL many years ago.
Zeke proudly served his country in the Army and Army Reserves at Fort Hood, Texas from 1957 to 1964.
Zeke joined the Phillipsburg Fire Co. No. 1 in 1964 and unselfishly gave 56 years of dedicated service to his community. He was honored at the 100th Anniversary Banquet for 50 Years of Service to Phillipsburg Fire Co. No. 1, in 2014. Life Memberships include: Phillipsburg Fire Co. No. 1, Alert Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association and New Jersey State Firemen’s Association. Over his 56 years of service, Zeke held the following offices: Phillipsburg Fire Co. No. 1 - Captain, Assistant Chief, Vice President, Assistant Treasurer and Trustee to the Phillipsburg Firemen’s Relief Association. At the time of his passing he was serving as President of Phillipsburg Fire Co. No. 1, a position he held since 2012. He also served on the 75th and the 100th Anniversary Celebration Committees for the fire company. He was currently serving as President of Phillipsburg Exempt Firemen’s Association, a position he has held since 1988. At the time of his passing he was serving as the Battalion Chief of the Phillipsburg Fire Department, a position he has held since 2007.
His wife of 57 years, the late Shirley A. (Werkheiser) Pyatt died March 20, 2019.
Survivors include two sons, Travis at home, Tracy and his wife Stephanie of Phillipsburg; a daughter, Robyn Morgan and her husband John of Dover, Delaware; a brother Roy of Phillipsburg; seven sisters, Stella Price, Joyce Pyatt, Frances Pyatt and Alberta Black, all of Phillipsburg, Jane Pyatt of Arizona, Charlotte Pugh of Whitehall, Pa and Virginia Allen of Washington State; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Additionally, the family wishes to mention John and Terry Lefler who were life-long friends, as well as Richard Hay. A son, Bernard "Tonner" Pyatt died July 5, 2013.
Funeral services with military honors are planned for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 in Walter's Park in Phillipsburg. Those in attendance must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
