Bertha Jean “Jean” Hoadley, 89, of Phillipsburg, died Saturday, November 5, 2011.
Born August 19, 1922 in Phillipsburg, she was a daughter of the late George and Julia Rounsaville Beers.
Jean graduated Phillipsburg High School in 1941. In 1943, she joined the Marine Corp., where she was assigned to assembly and repair in the small arms department at Cherry Point, North Carolina, where she maintained aircraft machine guns. She attained the rank of Corporal.
On September 7, 1946, she married the man whom she would spend the next sixty-fives years with, Joseph C. Hoadley, Jr.
She had worked in the pet department of the former Grants store in the Hillcrest Mall, Lopatcong Township.
Jean was a former fire police officer with the Huntington Volunteer Fire Company in Pohatcong Township and a member of their Ladies Auxillary. She coached baseball and softball in Pohatcong.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Greenwich Township where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
She was a member of the Bernardine-May American Legion Post, Phillipsburg; a life member of the Marine Corp. League in Chesapeake, Va.
Jean enjoyed playing pinochle.
In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by three sons, Joseph C., III and his wife, Wanda, of Chesapeake, VA, James W. and his wife Jan, of Beach Lake, Pa, and Robert S. and his wilfe Melissa, of Saylorsburg, Pa; two daughters, Deborah M. Grube and her husband Donald, of Pohatcong Township and Mary J. Pacenti and her husband, Edward, of Big Timbers, MT; a sister, Elizabeth Walters of Pennsylvania, thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A son, John L., two brothers, Richard and George Beers, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter all died earlier.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, in the Noto-Wynkoop Funeral Home, 289 South Main Street, Phillipsburg. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ. www.noto-wynkoop.com.
