Carl Joseph Alercia, 97, of Phillipsburg, N.J., loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on April 29, 2019 at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, PA.
Born June 5, 1921 in Easton, PA, he was the son of the late Thomas and Domenica (Oieni) Alercia
He graduated from Easton High School in 1939.
He was an Army veteran who served during WWII. He served in European Theatre of operations in Italy.
Carl was a barber for 40 years and owned Carl’s Barber Shop on Nesquehoning Street in Southside Easton.
He was a member of St. Philip and St. James Roman Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, NJ, and a member of the church’s Holy Name Society.
He was past president of the following organizations: Saint Anthony of Padua’s Holy Name Society in Easton, Porter School PTA and the Local Barbers Union 277. He was a lifetime member of the Order of Fleas Club and the Liberty Hose Company, both of Easton.
His daughter, Marge remembers their monthly visits to American Bandstand in Philadelphia which helped initiate the popular Notre Dame High School’s Saturday evening dances. Carl enjoyed bowling, and was an avid golfer and bridge player. He founded the bridge group at the Phillipsburg Senior Center.
Carl’s wife of 55 years, the former Marie Talotta died July 12, 1997.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret Alercia Horn and her husband Richard; two grandchildren, Nicole Horn and Richard C. Horn and his wife Dorothy, and a great-grandchild, Eliot Horn. He was predeceased by his sister Katie Castronuovo, Josephine Testa, Mary Mammano, and brothers Joseph, Samuel, and Anthony Alercia.
Friends and relatives will be received Monday, May 6, 2019 from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in St. Philip and St. James Church, 426 S. Main St., Phillipsburg, N.J., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Monday in the church. Interment will be in St. Philip and St. James Cemetery, Greenwich Township, N.J.
