Caroline Maddock Obituary

 

Caroline E. Maddock, 88, of Phillipsburg, NJ, died peacefully, March 20, 2026.

Born October 31, 1937, in her home on at 628 Roseberry St., Phillipsburg, she was a daughter to James Edward and Ruth Ann (Bullock) Moore.

She is survived by her three daughters Joan “Joni” Caffrey-Stocker and her husband Kyle, Noreen Davis and her husband Russell and Diane Herber and her husband David; grandchildren Sarah Garrecht (partner Jonas Woodring), Katrina “Kate” Herber, Russell “Rusty” Davis, Laura Silvay and her husband Craig, K. Alex Stocker; four great-granddaughters, Jenna, Myah, Lily, Emma; a brother Richard “Butch” Moore and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, James Edward Moore, III, Joan Spieles, Judith Mainhart and a very beloved grandson, Michael Davis. 

Caroline has been a lifelong resident of Phillipsburg and has served her community in numerous ways throughout her life. She enjoyed sewing, taking cruises and visiting Walt Disney World with family.

Caroline was a 1955 graduate of Phillipsburg High School and married Charles R. Caffrey in 1956 and raised their three daughters. She was a past president of the Freeman School PTA, a former 4-H Club Sewing Leader, and a former secretary and membership chairwoman for the Chessmen Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps in Easton, PA. Caroline hand-made uniforms for the Phillipsburg Middle School Band and Fife & Drum Corps for the bicentennial celebration in 1976.

Caroline began her employment with the Town of Phillipsburg in September 1969 as crossing guard in the Freeman School area. In the mid-1970’s Caroline transferred to the Phillipsburg Police Department as a dispatcher and was instrumental in the organization of the town employees to the (AFSCME) American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and later transferred to the Phillipsburg Municipal Court as a Court Administrator where she remained until July 1983.

After her marriage to Joseph Maddock in 1983, Caroline became co-owner of the area’s first video movie rental business, “Captain Video / Hollywood East” in the Phillipsburg, Easton, Nazareth and Frenchtown areas.

Caroline was employed at the Phillipsburg Free Press newspaper from 1996 to 2001 as a special writer, photographer and created a weekly feature called “The Back Fence” and a recurring feature column that focused on Phillipsburg residents called “Our Kind of People”.  From 2003 to 2019, Caroline served as the Director of Activities at the Phillipsburg Area Senior Center.  After her retirement, Caroline enjoyed spending time with family, watching true crime shows and playing games on her computer.

A gathering to remember and celebrate Caroline's life will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Mainline Catering & Events (formerly Flynn’s), 341 Pursel St, Phillipsburg, NJ.

Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are asked to make donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in her memory.
