Charles G. “Chuck” Nowalk, Jr., 68, of Harmony Township, NJ, returned home to his Lord and Savior in the evening hours of Saturday, September 4, 2021.
Chuck believed in Phillipsburg and the people who lived there, and live here now. He dedicated his life to serving his community: as a father, a teacher, a coach, a faithful servant in multiple congregations, a member of the New Jersey Education Association, a Cub Scout leader, a volunteer, and as a friend.
Born June 8, 1953, son of the late Charles G. Nowalk, Sr. and Margaret L. (Huffman) Nowalk, Chuck grew up in North Huntingdon, PA and was a graduate of Clarion College. He loved stories, whether books or movies, especially science fiction, ancient mythology, and fantasy. But even beyond being a bookworm, he was a man of faith, a student of the Bible and active servant of God.
Chuck was best known as a teacher. His passions led him to teach various math and compewter classes at Phillipsburg High School and Warren County Community College. He had lots of bad math and computer jokes, and for those the family does, kinda, apologize.
He came to Phillipsburg by way of Washington D.C. with his first wife, Rebecca, and together they raised three sons who survive him: Nicholas (2 children), Stephen (7 children), and Alex (a child himself). His sons have each gone out into the world to serve their own communities.
He transitioned into retirement with his second wife, Susan, who taught him to love animals great and small, and to tend a garden. And who enabled him to buy a pony for his granddaughter, to split his time between learning farm work and being a doting and loving grandfather to all his grandchildren.
Chuck ended his journey with his third wife, Joan, who never left his side, but also never let him win at Scrabble. He was still learning about that humility stuff ‘til the end.
He is survived by his wife Joan; sons Nick, Steve, and Alex; nine grandchildren; his siblings Nancy, Dan, Richard, Keith, and Mary Margaret; and various other family relations that they didn’t teach us about in Algebra.
Celebration of Life services will be held on Sat., October 9th at Walters Park Pavilion from 2PM-4PM (same times Sunday if inclement weather). The family graciously asks those who were students, coached by, or otherwise mentored by Chuck to attend his Celebration of Life in their choice of garnet and grey as tribute to his career as a Stateliner.
In lieu of flowers, the Nowalk family asks you to donate to your favorite charity. In Chuck’s legacy we encourage everyone to donate a portion of their time, however small, in support of their community, to whatever cause you are passionate about.
