Donald J. Butler, 86, of White Township, NJ, died on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Morristown Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1931 in Englewood, NJ, he was the son of the late John and Ellen (Fitzgerald) Butler.
Donald retired in 1988 after over 30 years of dedicated federal service. He was an Air Force veteran serving in Korea as an Airman radio technician during the Korean War. Donald followed his military service with a distinguished civilian career with the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the U.S. Army at West Point, NY and Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ from where he retired. Following his career, Donald continued his support to the military and its veterans. He spent over 10 years as a Veterans Affairs Counselor assisting veterans in their pursuit of a higher education.
Donald graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a B.A. Degree and a lifelong passion for Reading, Creative Writing and History. With an insatiable curiosity for all things life, he was a treasure trove of information on the history of the Morris Canal, the Civil War and many other areas in the telling of our colorful American story. Donald also enjoyed his garden, weekly card games, pool, and golf with his friends. He was an avid reader and writer, enjoyed nature and the outdoors and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a lifelong Catholic and a member of St. Patrick’s in Belvidere, NJ. Donald was an ardent believer in faith and had tolerance, compassion and empathy for all.
Donald and his wife, the former Frances J. Fimmano observed their 57th wedding anniversary April 30th.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John (Ashley) of Forest Hill, MD; four daughters, Donna Young (Stephen) of Naples, FL, Maureen Overko (Thomas) of Belvidere, NJ, Ellen Martire (Gregory) of Long Valley, NJ and Kathleen Butler of Alexandria, VA; a sister, Barbara Butler of Englewood, NJ and 14 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son,
Robert, two brothers, John and Robert and a sister, Eileen Butler.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 14th at St. Patrick's Catholic Church 327 Greenwich St, Belvidere, NJ 07823. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Tenafly, NJ.
