Guy Baker, Sr. Obituary

Guy I. Baker, Sr, 94, passed on Thursday, July 20, 2017 surrounded by family.

He was born October 11, 1922 in Phillipsburg to the late Guyger A. Baker and Bertha Hoffman Baker.

He married, the love of his life, Josephine Cicero Baker on October 16, 1948.  Together they compiled a family tree dating back into the 1700s, using nothing more than libraries, family bibles, census, and much cemetery walking. They shared 61 years of marriage until her death on January 20, 2010.

He proudly served in the Army Air Corp during World War II.

Guy retired from Conrail, the former Pennsylvania Railroad, September 1982, as a locomotive engineer.

He was a member of St. Philip and St. James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, New Jersey.

He was a career-long member of The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years and represented them during several conventions, at various locations across the United States, during the 1950s and 1960s. Additionally, he gladly assisted many railroad widows with final arrangements and paperwork concerning their husbands.

Other memberships include AARP, Lincoln Engine Fire Co, Bernadine-May American Legion Post all of Phillipsburg; as well as Citizen’s Hose and Liberty Hose of Easton PA.

Shortly after his retirement he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. One of his most treasured times with his family was the Annual Mother’s Day Dinner Outing. He was a true family man.

Surviving are his children: Jo Marie and her husband, Julius “Bud” Gray of Palmer Township, Pennsylvania; Guy Jr and his wife, Andrea of Tewksberry, New Jersey, John and his wife, Jean of Lake Bluff, Illinois.

His grandchildren are Jason Gray and his wife Dorothy Hiersteiner, and Dr. Erin Volpe and her husband Jason Volpe., Brian and Amy Baker, John Jr and Jaymes Baker. Each and every grandchild was a source of great pride and joy.

His siblings proceeding him in death were: Christopher, James, Frank, Joseph, Joan Lee, Irene Baker Degon and Joyce Baker Sabbock.
