Joan M. Phelan, 63, of Bethlehem, Pa, formerly of Phillipsburg, NJ died Friday, October 25, 2013 in Lehigh Valley Hospital Center – Muhlenberg.
Born December 15, 1949 in Easton, Pa, she was a daughter of the late Thomas D. and Margaret E. Kane Phelan.
Joan was a former substitute teacher in the Phillipsburg, Bethlehem and Saucon Valley school districts. Additionally, she was a hairdresser at Your Father’s Mustache in Hopewell, NJ; a writer for the Trenton Times, Trenton, NJ, an adjunct professor at the Raritan Valley Community College and worked in sales at Banana Republic at The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Bethlehem, Pa.
Joan enjoyed reading, volunteering at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem, Pa; she was a 25-year member of A.A. in Bethlehem and loved spending time at Musikfest as well as hosting musicians from South America during Musikfest.
Survivors include sisters, Ann Kerr and her husband, Gary, of Allentown, Pa and Ellen Smyser and her husband, Steve, of Bolivia, NC; nieces and nephews, Dan Phelan, Ally Dandeo, Meghan Kerr, Tom and Molly Smyser and Kate McRae; two grand nephews, Jake Phelan and Logan Dandeo. A brother, James K. Phelan died earlier.
The family will receive visitors from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the Noto-Wynkoop Funeral Home, 289 South Main Street, Phillipsburg, NJ. A celebration of Joan’s life will begin at 3:30 p.m.
