Josephine DeMonti, 94, a resident of Phillipsburg for more than seventy-years, died Sunday, May 23, 2021 in Morris View Healthcare Center, Morris Township, N.J.
Born February 4, 1927 in Easton, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Giovanni and Teresa (Ruta) Tona.
She graduated from Easton High School in 1944.
She was a member of St. Philip and St. James Roman Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, where she was a former Eucharistic Minister, a past president, travel chairman and trustee of its Over Fifties Club.
Josephine was a loving and supporting daughter, sister, wife, aunt, friend and most importantly mother/grandmother/great grandmother - which were her most cherished roles in life. Josephine still has a large family residing in Sicily which she loved to visit. She enjoyed playing cards with her life-long friends, gardening, bird watching, spending winters in Florida and cooking large Sunday family meals.
She was a fifty-year member of Court Warren #389, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and held several local Court offices, including Regent for 4 years. She was a state appointed District Deputy for Court Warren, Phillipsburg, N.J. and Court John Paul II, #2193, Flemington, N.J. She was elected delegate to many yearly State and National CDA Conventions (Court Warren DD 1986-2000 and Court John Paul DD 1987-1993). She was a charter member and a four-year treasurer for the Metuchen Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a recipient of the Holy Apostles Medal - First Awardees.
Josephine was a member and former treasurer of the Circolo Modicano Society, Easton. She also is a former board member of the Phillipsburg Area Meals-on-Wheels and was a former member and secretary of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a former member and served as vice president of the Warren County Council on Aging.
Her husband, the late Natale G. DeMonti died July 30, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Mingarell (Bill) of Camp Hill, Pa and Mariann Reddington of Stuart, FL; two sons, Anthony DeMonti, Sr. (Bobbi) of Colonial Beach, Va. and Michael DeMonti (Jill) of Hackettstown, N.J.; two granddaughters, six grandsons, five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. A sister Constance Whyman and three brothers, John, Ben and Russell Tona all died earlier.
Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2021 in the Noto-Wynkoop Funeral Home, 289 South Main St, Phillipsburg, NJ. (www.noto-wynkoop.com) A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2021 in St. Philip and St. James Roman Catholic Church, 426 South Main St, Phillipbsurg. Burial will be private.
